Aizu lacquerware with a gold phoenix design.
This is a suzuribako (writing box) and fumibako (letter box).
It has been opened but is new and unused.
There are tape marks on the bottom and side of the box (see photo 6).
Lacquerware decorated with gold maki-e (gold lacquer) is a traditional Japanese craft and offers visual beauty. The design of a bird grasping a blue mother-of-pearl ball is eye-catching. Another design features butterflies surrounding a central flower.
The delicate brushstrokes of the bird's feathers and the technique of using gold powder for decoration, as well as the layered lacquer technique with geometric patterns peeking from beneath the maki-e, are employed.

It is topped with a lid approximately 0.5cm thick.
