Description
Natsume (Jujube) Tea Caddy, Traditional Craft, 15 Red-Crested Red-Crowned Cranes, Black Lacquer, with Matsukui-tsuru (Pine-Eating Crane) Maki-e (Gold Lacquer) Design, Unused, with Wooden Box
Dimensions are approximate, measured by an amateur.
Body Diameter: Approx. 65mm, Height: Approx. 60mm, Lid/Body Joint Diameter: Approx. 60mm
As noted on the inside of the wooden box lid, this item was a gift from an acquaintance in Osaka to my father in September 1945 and is unused.
The maki-e cranes are intricately depicted with 9 cranes on the lid and 6 cranes on the body, totaling 15 small cranes.
The Matsukui-tsuru maki-e design combines cranes, symbolizing longevity, with pine, symbolizing eternal youth and longevity, making it a very auspicious pattern.
The rim around the lid/body joint is finished with gold maki-e.
I have viewed various Matsukui-tsuru maki-e works online, and a distinctive feature of this piece is the large number of red-crested red-crowned cranes, which are not commonly seen in other works.
Cranes with red heads are considered auspicious items.
Although the author's name is not written on the box, I believe this is a rare piece.
Based on the color scheme of the lacquerware, it is likely Wajima-nuri.
This item has been stored at home for a long time, so please judge its condition based on the images.
